Mission Statement Review and Changes

CAJ’s board of directors reviews our core documents on a regular rotation, and over a year and ½ carefully examined CAJ’s mission statement. A well-crafted mission statement helps focus energy on the primary vision of the board and community. Following that review, the board has approved a new mission statement that is shorter and carefully focused on our desired outcome for students. The new mission statement reflects current best practice for mission statements.

Our previous mission statement read:
Christian Academy in Japan, a school for the children of evangelical missionaries in Japan, equips students to impact the world for Christ.

One of the proposed changes was to remove the name "Christian Academy in Japan" from the statement. An organization’s mission statement belongs to that organization so using the name in the statement is redundant and adds unnecessary length. Fewer words makes a mission statement more user-friendly and memorable which makes it more likely to be widely used within the organization.

Another change that was considered was to remove the qualifying statement “a school for the children of evangelical missionaries in Japan.” CAJ’s board and leadership team are fully devoted to preserving our core purpose of serving the missionary community in Japan. The discussion revolved around whether or not the mission statement was the most appropriate place to ensure that we remain committed to that purpose for coming generations. One of the challenges discussed was that the mission statement seemed to imply that CAJ was only a school for missionary children. CAJ’s ongoing commitment to serving the missionary community is well documented and protected elsewhere. The Japanese government accepts our official purpose statement which is the basis for our ends. This protection is also found in our Act of Endowment and Constitution.

Also considered again was whether the inclusion of this wording seemed to add unnecessary length. A final factor analyzed was whether including this qualifier made it too means focused, which is not considered best practice for mission statements. Ends are the larger board vision, while means are the way you accomplish the vision. The board talked at length about the best possible verb choice. Best practice dictates using an action verb, and many experts say the verb should be at the beginning of the statement. The board decided to keep the concept of “equip” and change the form to “equipping” so it can be used at the beginning of the statement.

The board also considered our changing demographic and our role in evangelizing Japan. Many more of our students are choosing to stay in Japan for college and intend to live their entire lives here. In a recent publication we talked about how CAJ seems to be a more local school in some ways. To emphasize our commitment to Japan, they added “Japan” to “the world” as our target.

The board explored the use of the term “impact” as our product. Equipping to impact does describe our hopes, desires, and ambitions for students. We want each of them to be able to make a difference wherever they end up and whatever they are called to do. But an even more descriptive word for our program is “serve.” We strive to make our students into individuals who are capable of serving others in ways that will have a positive impact both globally and locally.

Because CAJ is fully committed to remaining a Christ centered school, “for Christ” was retained in the mission statement. Even non-Christian students are being prepared to be a certain type of global citizen. Whether or not they profess to follow Christ, we are equipping all our students to serve all people and care for creation in the way that Christians should. Many people already refer to a shortened version of our mission statement as “equipping students to impact the world.” By intentionally shortening our overall mission statement it is hoped that the “for Christ” aspect will not be abbreviated out and will retain its intended and essential emphasis.

So following prayerful and intentional review, put them all together and we have our newly revised and updated mission statement:

Equipping students to serve Japan and the world for Christ.

However, these changes do not mean a radical new direction for CAJ. This new mission statement still reflects our full and continuing commitment to remaining rooted in tradition, growing in grace, and seeking to serve Him. I am personally and professionally excited about these changes, and fully committed to working towards achieving this as our ultimate objective.

使命声明見直しと変更に関して

CAJの理事会は 学校の中核に関わる文書を定期的に見直していますが、この１年半の間にCAJの使命声明を特に吟味してきました。上手にまとめられた使命声明は、理事会とコミュニティーが持つ基本的なビジョンにエネルギーを集中する手助けになります。理事会は、今回の見直し後に、 新しい使命声明を承認しました。それは 、生徒たちに達成させたい目標に以前よりも焦点を当てており、より短くなっています。新しい使命声明は、最も効率の良い方法を用いて採用されたものです。

現在の使命声明は以下の通りです。

「福音派宣教師の子弟を預かるクリスチャン・アカデミー・イン・ジャパンは、キリストのため世界にインパクトを与えるような生徒を養育する。」

提案の一つは、“クリスチャンアカデミーインジャパン”、を声明文から取り除くことでした。組織が掲げる使命声明とはその組織のものであるのが当然ですので、組織の名前を入れることは重複になり、それを不必要に長くしてしまいます。短い方がより親しみやすく覚えやすいので、組織内でも使われる機会が増えるはずです。

もひとつの提案は、“福音派宣教師の子弟を預かる”、というフレーズを取り除くことでした。CAJの中核となる目的は、日本の宣教師コミュニティーに仕えるということですから、理事会とリーダーシーップチームは、その目的への専心を当然維持していきます。討議の焦点は、これからの世代に対して、CAJのこの目的への変わらぬ専心を示す箇所が、使命声明であるべきかでした。討議された課題の一つは、使命声明を見ると、まるで、CAJが宣教師の子供たちだけのための学校であるかのように聞こえることでした。宣教師コミュニティーのためにCAJが献身していることは他の箇所に明確に記されており、その理念は守られています。日本政府は、CAJの目標の基礎となっている我々公式な使命声明を了承しています。これらを守って行くことは、寄附行為と学校憲章にも記載されています。

また、この見直しでもう一つ考慮されたのは、このフレーズによって声明文が不必要に長くなってしまっているか、でした。最終的に考慮された要素は、このフレーズを含めることによって、“方法”がより強調されてしまい、使命声明には適していないということでした。“目標”は幅の広い理事会のビジョンであり、“方法”はそのビジョンを達成するための手段です。CAJがどのような方法でこれからも日本の宣教師コミュニティーに奉仕し続けて行くかをさらに詳しく知りたい方は、こちらをご覧ください。

理事会はどのような動詞を使うべきかをも長い時間をかけて討議しました。一番良いのは起動動詞を使うことで、多くの専門家が 、その動詞を声明のはじめにおくべきだ言っています（英語に関しては−訳者注）。理事会は、”equip (日本語訳は”養育”から”育成”に変更 - 訳者注）”という言葉をそのまま維持し、文頭にもってくることにしました。

理事会はまた、CAJにおけるデモグラフィックの変化と、CAJの日本の伝道における役割も考慮しました。以前に比べて、CAJの多くの生徒たちが日本の大学に進学し、その後も一生日本に住むことを選択しています。最近発行したCAJ年代記の中でもお話したように、CAJは以前にくらべて、ある意味、より日本に根付いた学校になってきています。また、日本に対する私たちの熱意を示すために、ターゲットとして“世界”だけでなく“日本”という言葉も加えました。

理事会はまた“インパクトを与える”という言葉も分析してみました。“インパクトを与えるような生徒を養育する”というフレーズは、私たちが生徒に対して抱いている希望、要望、志を表しています。私たちは生徒一人一人が、自分たちが置かれた場所で、神様に示されたことを行うときに、それぞれの力を発揮してほしいと願っています。しかし、“仕える”という言葉のほうが、CAJのプログラムをさらによく表していると考えました。私たちは、生徒たちがグローバルに、またローカルに、良いインパクトを与えられるような方法で他の人に仕えることのできる人になってもらいたいと望み、日々努力しています。

CAJは、キリストを中心とした学校として存続して行くことに固い決意を持っていますので、“キリストのために”というフレーズは残しました。たとえクリスチャンでない生徒も、グローバル社会の一員として一定の備えができるように教えられています。キリストに従い歩む者、そうでない者に関わらず、私たちは生徒全てが、クリスチャンとしての行動基準を持って、すべての人と、神様の被造物に仕えることがでるように育成しています。多くの人々がすでにCAJの使命声明のショートバージョンである、“世界にインパクトを与えるような生徒を養育する”、を引用しています。意図的に使命声明全体を短くすることによって、本来の概念である“キリストのために”、というフレーズが 省略されることなく、私たちの意図の本質が保たれるようにと私たちは望んでいます。

そして、注意深く祈りを持って見直した結果、以下の通り、新しい使命声明を決定いたしました。

「キリストのために日本と世界に仕える生徒を育成する。」

しかし、これらの変化が、CAJの方針を大きく変える、ということではありません。この新しい使命声明は、CAJが伝統に根付き、恵みのうちに成長し、主に仕えることを追い求める、というCAJの変わらぬ決意を反映するものです。 この新しい変化を私は、個人としても、またCAJの職員としてもとてもすばらしいものと喜び、この目標に向かって一新に進んで行くことを決意しています。
