Varsity girls' basketball loses two pool play games on Day 2 of Kanto Classic

The varsity girls' basketball team lost two more pool play games in the Kanto Classic Tournament pool play on Friday, falling to Academy of Our Lady (34-26) and St. Paul (34-20). The Knights finished pool play with a 0-4 record and now have a 7-6 overall record this season.

The Knights' slow start against Academy of Our Lady was tough to overcome. The Cougars led 33-14 at one point on the strength of their dominant post player, who ended with 20 points and many rebounds. But coach Craig Eby had the team put on a 1-2-1-1 zone press late in the third quarter, which proved to be successful. CAJ scored 12 consecutive points in the fourth quarter.

"Our press really got in the groove mostly against their bench players, but even when they brought their starters back, we still got another steal and scored against them," Eby said.

Against one of the tournament's top teams, Eby was happy with the second-half performance from the Knights. Mari led CAJ with eight points and seven rebounds, while Rachel had seven points and Anna and Jessica each had four points and four rebounds.

Against St. Paul, the game went differently. CAJ went ahead 10-9 after the first quarter before a very active Warriors defense swarmed them later in the game to take a lead and extend it.

"In the first quarter, our press did well at causing turnovers," Eby said. "Then, we got a little tired. In the third quarter, everything they did was double team, double team, double team. We were throwing the ball away left and right. We've had trouble putting four good, or even average, quarters together."

Anna led CAJ's attack against St. Paul with nine points and four rebounds. Jessica also had seven rebounds.

The physicality of CAJ's opponents, both from Guam, made it difficult for the Knights. Coach Craig Eby said the officials called the game more loosely than CAJ was used to, and the team needs to do a better job of adjusting.

The Knights begin tournament play against Kinnick on Saturday at 9:40 a.m. Full tournament information is available
