JV girls' basketball loses 29-27 to Kinnick

The JV girls' basketball team narrowly lost 29-27 to Kinnick on Thursday night. The Knights' season record is now 5-5.

The game started slowly for the JV, which had only two points in the first quarter. However, the Knights recovered with a 12-point second quarter to take a 14-11 halftime lead. However, the team was unable to handle the bigger Red Devils on the boards for much of the game, and Kinnick ended up taking a lead in the third quarter.

CAJ switched to a 1-3-1 trapping defense in the last few minutes of the game and closed the gap to two thanks to a few forced turnovers and baskets. However, the Knights couldn't convert on two good shots close to the basket on their final possession. The final buzzer sounded as the second shot was in the air.

"Unfortunately, that last play was a very good summary of the game for us," coach Jared Johnson said. "Especially after the first quarter, we were getting lots of very good shot opportunities within five feet of the basket, but things just weren't going in."

Johnson said the team stayed mentally tough to bounce back from poor first and third quarters, but that the team needed to stay more aggressive near the basket and more composed in key moments. He added that Kinnick was taking and making several outside shots, so the Knights needed to be better at adjusting their defense.

Mari led the Knights with 10 points and 11 rebounfds. Tayoung had six points, Mariko had five points, five rebounds and five steals and Akina had four points and three steals.

JV's next game will not be until next Saturday's JV Tournament at ASIJ.
