MS soccer A Team places 4th at A Team Tournament

The middle school soccer team competed in the A Team Tournament on Saturday at ASIJ, finishing 4th place out of 9 teams. The Knights lost 3-1 against ASIJ in the semifinal game and then lost 3-0 in penalty kicks to KIST in the 3rd place after tying 4-4 at the end of regulation.

CAJ was able to secure a top-4 placing heading into the day with their regular-season record, which allowed them to advance directly to the semifinal game.

Coach Charles Smoker gave his thoughts on the A Team's first game:

"The score was 2-1 at halftime," Smoker said. "It was 2-1 for the whole second half and we had some decent looks, but couldn't convert. With six minutes to go, ASIJ scored on a free kick to put the game out of reach for us. We let in two early goals, but after that we played our best soccer of the season. If we don't let in those two early goals, this story might have ended differently."

CAJ's lone goal against ASIJ came from SuYoung on a penalty kick.

"After our semifinal game, we literally had only 10 minutes before the 3rd place game versus KIST, so we were exhausted before the game began. Unfortunately, we again gave up two goals early in the game to be down 2-0 before we started playing soccer.

We came back in the second half to tie it at 3-3, but KIST scored again to go ahead. We got the equalizer with about seven minutes to go. Even after that, we had several good chances but couldn't score and the game was tied 4-4 and went to PKs. We had practiced PKs for weeks, but couldn't score on our first three shots. KIST did, so they won.

It was a disappointing 3rd place game, but the guys were exhausted."

Ray had two goals against KIST, and Chris and SuYoung each had one goal. Simon, Eastin and J each had one assist in the game.

The A Team's season is now done. They finished with an overall record of 3-5-1.
