Varsity boys' basketball loses 51-50 to St. Mary's

The varsity boys' basketball team just barely missed out on a win against St. Mary's on Friday, losing 51-50. CAJ now has a record of 3-4 against Kanto Plains teams.

The Titans led the Knights by 13 points at halftime, but CAJ chipped away at the lead with well-executed offense and physical defense in the third quarter. The Knights scored 22 points to the Titans' 11 coming out of halftime.

"At the end of the second quarter, St. Mary's took their big guy out," coach Steve Hall said. "Enosh scored some baskets in the post, and that started to turn the tide. In the second half, we started to make some outside shots and were able to find driving lanes, especially baseline."

The Knights had their chances to win. Stephen hit a three-point shot with 12 seconds remaining to cut St. Mary's lead to one point. A Titans player missed the first free throw of a one-and-one situation and the Knights got the ball back with about 10 seconds remaining. However, Eugene missed a floater in the lane and St. Mary's was able to rebound the ball and win the game.

Despite the loss, Hall was pleased with his team's toughness in this game. He said that CAJ has recently added some new wrinkles to its offensive plays that has helped the team adjust to different defenses and find some more variety. The last time these two teams met, CAJ had just five points in the first half and 28 points in the game.

Defense was also a strength in this game for CAJ, Hall said. He commented that the Knights were stubborn in staying with their marks on defense and that the team did a good job limiting two of the Titans' key scorers from the perimeter.

Some key performances for CAJ came from Koji (14 points, four rebounds), Ty (12 points), Enosh (10 points and 14 rebounds), Eugene (eight points, five rebounds) and Stephen (six points, eight rebounds).

CAJ's next game will be next Tuesday evening at ASIJ.
