Varsity girls' basketball loses two pool play games on Day 1 of Kanto Classic

The varsity girls' basketball team lost a pair of Kanto Classic Tournament pool play games to Kubasaki (31-22) and Zama (58-33) at ASIJ on Thursday. The Knights' overall season record is now 7-4.

CAJ had a very lethargic offensive start against Kubasaki, scoring just six first-half points. The Knights weren't moving quickly and the pace of the game was slow as CAJ played a very conservative zone defense.

Coach Craig Eby said CAJ woke up after it moved to a press defense in the second half. The defense produced some steals and some easy baskets for the team, but Eby said the Knights were "never really hitting from the outside."

In the second game, CAJ started out on fire with 18 first-quarter points. Zama began the game playing its reserves and the Knights capitalized with a full-court press that produced many layups. However, Zama gradually began to lean more on its starting group as the game wore on.

In the second half, the wheels fell off as the Trojans' speed and passing on the fast break burned CAJ numerous times. Zama scored all of the game's 22 points in the quarter, moving the score from a 31-28 CAJ lead to a 50-31 Zama lead. The Trojans wouldn't relinquish that lead.

"They were picking us up well with their zone defense, and we were trying to dribble around it too much," Eby said. "We need to understand the idea of passing the ball around to break down the defense and staying disciplined to wait for good shots."

The Knights have two more pool play games on Friday: against Academy of our Lady at 10:30 a.m. and against St. Paul's at 3:20 p.m. Full tournament information is available
