Varsity boys' basketball beats St. Maur 59-16

Excellent defense spurred the varsity boys’ basketball team to a resounding 59-16 win on Saturday against St. Maur, who struggled to score on the Knight’s press and half-court defenses.

It was a blowout all the way for CAJ, which led 32-12 at halftime. The team had a balanced attack led by Asuma (13 points), Enosh (12) and Josh (10) in a cathartic performance after a big loss to ASIJ the night before.

Especially in the second half, the Knights hustled very well on defense to make sure the Cougars didn’t get clean looks from anywhere on the floor. St. Maur had only four points after halftime.

“Coach gave us a new defense in the second half and we were able to do it really well, especially with rotations,” Josh said. “We need to work on defensive rebounding more, because we gave up a lot of offensive rebounds today, but [the defense] was much improved.”

Coach Steve Hall is confident that the team can maintain its defensive intensity and focus moving forward this season. He says the team’s potential rests on its ability to knock down outside shots when they are available.

“We can defend well enough to stay in games. For us, it’s going to be ‘can we score enough points to be competitive?’” Hall said. “In order for our transition to work well, we need to be able to knock down threes from the corner, and we were able to do that today.”

Like the boys’ JV team, the Knights’ victory over the Cougars on Saturday was their first league win of the year. CAJ is now 4-8 overall and 1-6 in the Kanto Plains. Their next contests will be at the ASIJ Invitational Tournament next week. They will play games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
