HS wrestling competes in Day 2 of Far East Tournament

The high school wrestling team completed the second day of its Far East Tournament at Kinnick on Friday. The Knights ended up placing fifth in Division II in points from the individual championship scoring, and they got one loss and one win in the dual meet championship.

A big highlight from the day was that Jordan placed first overall in the 108-pound weight division by defeating his opponent from Yokota by a technical fall.

"With this being Jordan's fourth year, it has been a longtime dream for him to win a Far East championship," coach Morris Yaegashi. "He's won a bunch of other tournaments, but he had never gotten this one. He really, really worked hard and sacrificed for this all season. He deserved it and it was good for the underclassmen to see him accomplish something great, and they want a taste of that [in the future], too."

Joe (115) finished fifth place in his weight class with a loss by fall and then a win by fall.

"I truly do believe that he's a wrestler capable of placing much higher," Yaegashi said. "Even against [115-pound champion] Eiji, he brought it pretty close and had plenty of chances to win. He just needs to tighten up a few of his skills and get some more experience so he can execute better and wrestle tough without getting too nervous on big stages. If he returns next year, I'm fully confident that he has a very good shot at his own title."

After the individual championships were over, CAJ was slotted as the fifth seed in Division II and faced M.C. Perry first in the dual meet tournament. The Knights lost all three contested matches and lost 40-15 overall. However, the team got a win against Daegu by a score of 30-5 to move ahead in the consolation bracket.
