HS girls' basketball wins two games against Yokota

The high school girls' basketball teams both won against Yokota at home on Tuesday evening. Varsity won 40-33 and JV won 26-18.

The varsity was able to hold off the Panthers despite missing starting point guard Mitsuki and key reserve Nana.

"I knew we were going to have to work hard in this game, because Yokota has been the team to play us the closest so far this season," varsity coach Craig Eby said. "It was a slow start with some fumbles and some easy shots missed, but we settled down and looked like the same team that had handled Kinnick and YIS for big stretches in the second and fourth quarters."

Eby added, "I'm proud of the fact that, even without our key point guard, we ended up handling things and passing the ball well."

Some key statistical performances for CAJ came from Anna (12 points, six rebounds, five steals), Rachel (12 points, three assists), Mari (eight points, 10 rebounds, three steals, two assists) and Jessica (four points, 11 rebounds, five steals, three blocks).

The JV took a first quarter lead with a couple of three-point baskets from Sora. The Panthers fought back to take a brief lead midway through the second quarter, but CAJ scored the next 10 points spanning halftime to take control of the game.

"Our focused defensive effort was the main reason for this win," JV coach Jared Johnson said. "Despite having only six players, everyone gave great effort and showed an attention to detail on defense. If we can tighten up our offensive execution a bit, we should be in really good shape moving forward."

In the game, Sora contributed 15 points, seven rebounds and four steals for the Knights. Marikah (seven points, three steals), Kiera (four points, seven rebounds and two assists) and Devika (five steals) also filled the stat sheet.

In Kanto Plains play, varsity remains undefeated with a 6-0 record. JV is now unofficially 4-2 on the season, with a 3-1 record in official games. Both teams will play on Friday versus Kinnick at home.
