Varsity boys' basketball team loses and then wins on final day of Kanto Classic

The varsity boys' basketball team wrapped up Kanto Classic Tournament play at ASIJ on Saturday with two games. They first lost to Yokota 55-51, which eliminated them from the tournament's top eight teams. However, the team rebounded to defeat Zama 53-31 in consolation play.

CAJ led Yokota for much of the Knights' morning loss. The young team was able to score pretty well for most of the game, but coach Steve Hall said "our inexperience kicked in" for the last few minutes.

"The guys felt like it was a game they should have won," Hall said. "But growth is painful. It doesn't matter how much I tell them things, they just kind of have to experience it for themselves."

Hall said Zama hung on against the Knights for the first quarter and some of the second quarter. However, CAJ shot the ball much better from the outside than Zama and was able to pull away in part because of that.

"They usually do most of their damage on offense in transition with their drives," Hall said. "Since we could mostly eliminate those chances and they weren't shooting super well, we are able to win this one pretty easily."

Hall was also pleased that he was able to give everybody on the team significant minutes in this game for experience.

CAJ's overall season record now stands at 8-11. The Knights will have exhibition home games next week Thursday and Saturday against Alumni and the REIRS Men's Club, respectively, but their next official game will be at home against Kinnick on Tuesday, February 5.
