HS girls' basketball gets one win and one loss against Kinnick

The high school girls' basketball teams hosted Kinnick for two games on Friday evening. Varsity won 51-23 and JV lost 34-24.

Varsity was able to survive an energetic first half from Kinnick that kept the Knights from pulling away, and Kinnick made the first shot of the second half to cut CAJ's lead to 18-13. However, CAJ went on a 33-7 run the rest of the way.

"We were having fun playing together, and we were able to recognize it when we got hot [by continuing to attack]," varsity coach Craig Eby said. "The defense looked good. Our man-to-man is definitely our best defense, and for not being a big team, we rebound very well."

Some key performances from CAJ came from Rachel (16 points), Anna (12 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, three steals), Jessica (10 points, 10 rebounds, five steals), Mari (seven points, 14 rebounds) and Mitsuki (four points, six rebounds, four assists).

JV had a slow start offensively before bouncing back to take the lead as late as midway through the third quarter. Unfortunately, Kinnick's shooters caught fire and ended up scoring 20 points in the third quarter to take the lead for good.

"At this level, I've never seen anything like what Kinnick did in the third and early fourth quarters," JV coach Jared Johnson said. "I think I counted eight straight shots attempts made by them, seven of which were taken outside of the key and most of which were well-defended.

Our defense stayed pretty solid throughout the game, but sometimes the ball just doesn't bounce your way. It was a good lesson for us in controlling what we can control and not getting discouraged when unfortunate things happen outside of our control."

Marikah had 12 points and seven rebounds for CAJ. Sora also had nine points, and Kiera had two blocks and three steals.

In Kanto Plains play, varsity remains undefeated with a 7-0 record. JV is now unofficially 4-3 on the season, with a 3-2 record in official games. JV will play at home against ASIJ next Monday, and both teams will play at home against ISSH next Tuesday.
