Varsity girls' basketball beats St. Maur 64-22

The varsity girls’ basketball team coasted to an easy 64-22 victory on Saturday morning at CAJ against St. Maur. The Knights led the Cougars 41-12 at halftime before slowing down the pace of the game in the second half.

CAJ’s hard work inside stood out as a big factor in the blowout. The Knights had a 39-15 lead in rebounds, led by Julia’s 14, Yeonjoo’s seven and six each for Annabelle and Erika. Julia also had 15 points, while Kachel had 13 and Reiko had 11.

Coach Craig Eby discussed his team’s focus on defense using a variety of different formations as a very good sign from the team.
“We jumped out to a lead using a 1-3-1 half-court trap, but a lot of it was just putting pressure on,” Eby said. “We worked on our 2-3, and it closed things down inside. We got to work on our man [defense], which led to a couple quick fouls early on, and we thought we were going to get in foul trouble. Then after that, we settled down and started playing defense with our feet by moving into position.”

Captain Kachel said the team did well rebounding on Saturday, but still noticed room for improvement that will come in handy against tougher opponents.
“We need to box out the big girls more so we don’t get overpowered. Sometimes, we try to jump but can’t reach it [over our opponents],” she said.

CAJ is now 9-3 this season, with a 7-3 record against their Kanto League rivals. The varsity will travel to ISSH next Tuesday for a game at 7 p.m.
