MS soccer registers one win, one loss and one tie at St. Mary's

CAJ's two middle school soccer teams played at St. Mary's on Saturday, getting one win, one loss and one tie in their three games.

The Knights' A Team lost 4-2 to the Titans' A Team. Coach Keesh Kawaguchi said this about the game:

"The final score might not have you believe we came so close to tying the game throughout the second half. We put up a fight, and I am very proud of them for it. I got to see what our team can be and what I can do to better serve them as their coach.

It was an eye-opener for me that middle school soccer games can be reckless at times, since many players are still learning to control everything in front of them as well as their own bodies. For that, I appreciate each player willing to play defense and/or keeper for the team. I know it is not an easy task.

It is great to see little bits and pieces of the fruits of their labor — we saw that in two goals. I am very proud of them for finding ways to assist as well as shooting with precision when it counted. I look forward to building on this experience."

David scored both of the A Team's goals. Suyoung assisted him on one of them.

As for the B Team, the squad tied the B Team for St. Mary's' 1-1 in its first game. Coach Charles Smoker offered some thoughts about his team's performance:

"We were a little bit anxious at kickoff and not sure what to expect, since it was the first CAJ soccer game for 11 of our 15 players, including the first official game for many of the guys. We had good teamwork in the first half and were threatening to score several times, but we were unable to put the ball in the back of the net. St. Mary's had a corner kick and the ball deflected off our team member for an own goal.

St. Mary's almost had goal number two a few minutes later, but Junhyun made an amazing play and hustled back to the goal to kick out the ball just inches away from it rolling in. In the second half, we relied on our swarming defense and a beautiful save by our keeper Simon to preserve a 1-0 lead.

Midway in the second half, Ronald took the ball down the right side and unloaded a cannon shot from outside the box to equalize the game at 1! We had several other chances but the game ended 1-1. It was a great comeback to tie 1-1 and a great chance to see what we're made of! Thank you Lord for great team unity and cohesion."

The B Team then shut out the St. Mary's C Team 4-0.

"This was a game where players could try different positions and see the game from a different perspective," Smoker said. "For example, Kento played keeper for the first time ever and did great! It was fantastic to see the guys learn and grow today."

In all, the B Team got one goal from Ronald in the first game, then two from Sejin, one from Jay and one from Christopher in the second game. Eastin had two assists in the second game, and Simon and Sejin both had one apiece.

The next games for the middle school soccer teams are at CAJ next Saturday against Nishimachi. The A Team will play at 9 a.m. and the B Team will follow at 10:30.
