The JV boys' basketball team earned its first win of the season Wednesday night, defeating YIS 45-39 in overtime. CAJ's league record is now 1-2.

The Knights had a slow start, especially offensively, as they faced deficits of 5-2 and 14-9 at the end of the first two quarters, respectively. CAJ fought back and took a lead of three points with just seconds remaining in the game. However, YIS sank a long three-pointer at the fourth-quarter buzzer to send the game into overtime.

From that point, CAJ kicked its offense into high gear and quickly jumped out to a nine-point lead, which proved to be enough for the win.

Coach Charles Smoker pointed to a Tuesday practice game that helped the team improve its intensity for Wednesday's game.

"We've been talking about playing with guts, because every game we've come out really flat," Smoker said. "The biggest factor is that we're coming out timid and afraid and anxious. But yesterday we played a practice game against Gakugei school, and it was a very physical game. That really woke us up physically and mentally, especially in the guts department."

Smoker added, "if we played this game three or four days ago, we wouldn't have won because we weren't ready in the heart department."

Smoker also commented that a loud and supportive CAJ crowd gave the JV team a big boost in the game.

CAJ's leading scorers in the game were Satvik (16 points), Leif (13), Josiah (eight) and Hikaru (five). The JV Knights' next game will be next Tuesday at home against Zama.
